San Sebastian Memories
They say museums are for archaeology fiend, art aficionado and history buffs but they are wrong. There are people who want to know a city on its memories and the better way to get it is through a museum visit. Most museums in San Sebastian Donostia have great rotating collections besides those permanent displays.
Museum hopping in your San Sebastian travel is one activity that we should engage besides experiencing a day on its beaches. Museo Chilida Leku,Museo Diocesano de San Sebastian, Museo Naval, Museo San Telmo and Sociedad Fotografica are some of the most visited museums in this Basque country.
- Museo Chillida Leku is classified as art museum opened in 2000 which would celebrate the works of Eduardo Chillida, a San Sebastian native. Chillida works is displayed in open space which erases the mental picture of quiet, indoor and dark passageways. The museum is situated on 12 acres of farmland and the artwork is displayed on its field’s space. You can visit the museum on Wednesday and Monday 10:30 am to 2 pm and tours with a minimum of 20 people during Friday to Sunday noon.
- Barrio de Amara is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am until 2pm. This diocesan museum offers a wide variety of display of religious artwork purchased by the San Sebastian diocese. Sculptures and paintings from 18th to 19th Century are on display. The collection has been arranged in a chronological order so you can trace and compare the artwork pieces.
- Museo Naval is a museum that showcases the artifacts that influenced the city’s maritime history. San Sebastian as part of the Basque region has been dependent with the sea for hundred of years; so it is only fitting that a museum is made to showcase their skills and expertise especially in boat making.
- Sociedad Fotografica offers a set of photographic mementos and video and also the home of Guipuzcoan Photographic Society.
- Museo San Telmo is a local favorite situated in an old monastery that dates back around 1500’s.
