chefHowever, the La Tamborrada is a one of a kind San Sebastian Festival too. Yearly on every 20th of January, the people of San Sebastian City celebrate this festival on the streets with a crescendo of drum playing. This specific festival has been believed that was originated during the Napoleonic wars by the disrespectful local people particularly the chefs of the French soldiers. Moreover, another alternative was that a baker long time ago, 18th century passed by, was singing while he was filling his water barrels when several young girls happened to bang on the barrels to accompany him, and suddenly the crowd gathered to observe them. That was how La Tamborrada was believed and born.

That is the main reason why the parade starts as adults wear costumes of cooks and soldiers, and then they are followed by drum playing bands marching in different companies from corner to corner in different parts of the city with special schedules. After that a great number of marchers represent the San Sebastian’s cooking societies but many of which only the male members are allowed.

The starting point begins in the Old Quarter or well-known as the Parte Vieja wherein a mayor raises the flag of their beloved city of San Sebastian. All through that day, the entire city is covered with water with the resonance of drums. When the city flag, the one which the mayor of San Sebastian Spain raises in the morning is lowered down at midnight, it generally means that the celebration is finish.
